Universities exist for two purposes:
1. To keep young people off the streets and hide unemployment
2. To keep middle-aged malcontents off the streets
Not the best thing for a PhD student/hopeful academic to hear first thing in the morning, but maybe this guy was just fed up with all the paperwork and bureaucracy. I try not to be naive, but surely it can't be that bad?!
